Definitely one of the best French castles that don’t only tell of the past of its people but the rich tradition coupled with architectural beauty is the castle of Foix. Even though it’s not protected by UNESCO, the French government still made this castle as one of the structures that has to be preserved for eternity.
The castle was built during the 10th century and from the very start, the castle was built not only for the sake of housing the nobility of the Foix but as a way of protecting them from the apparent invasion and was even used as a strategic base for the military. If you’re coming in to the town of Foix, you’ll immediately notice that the castle is situated on top of the hill. The three towers that you’ll see from afar could be likened to a trident that’s about to pierce the sky. Since it’s located in the hill, the coming enemy can be seen from any direction and with the advantage of being located in a fort, any incoming enemies can easily be defeated. If you stand in one of the towers you’ll definitely see why it’s so important. The people are very small from your standpoint but you can clearly make out who they are and what they are planning to do once they can get near to your castle. They’ll never know what hit them. When you’re in Foix for the weekend, be sure to get a glimpse of the history of the town by visiting the castle.

Inside the castle has been transformed into a museum since the 1930s. Before that, part of the castle was used as a political and civil prison until the middle of the 19th century. Part of it was used as a party house for the governors of the province and other nobility that happened to stop by. As a museum, not only you’ll see the role of this castle that led to its fame, you’ll also see the extensive past of the people of Foix even in the prehistoric era. Artifacts that were found in town are on display in this museum.
The best way to enjoy this town and the castle is to stay here at least for a week. Rent a farm hotel where they can give you the taste of the daily life of the people. You’ll be living like a local for a while but instead of doing some manual labor; you just roam around looking at the famous spots of the area. The obvious highlight is the castle where you can spend a day there looking at things and appreciating the view. You can ask from the local tourism office to give you a guide at least for a day to know where to go, where to shop, where to dine and where to enjoy the night. With a minimal fee, you won’t miss anything that’s good in this town. The castle, the people and the town is not hard to miss and should be one of the highlights of anyone’s French vacation.
